The Mind Behind SARA MELKI

The Mind Behind SARA MELKI

Describe a day in the life as Sara Melki.

A day in the life of Sara Melki, in Africa : I wake up early in the morning, have my usual walk with my daughter, I exercise, then have my breakfast. Later in the day, I meet my husband at his office, check my emails, follow up with Maria (my assistant in Beirut) to check on the boutique. My husband and I have lunch together and then at around 5pm, we head back home to have some quality time with my daughter, cook dinner and go to bed.

A day in the life of Sara Melki in Beirut (before the explosion): I wake up early, exercise, have my breakfast. Then I check on the garment makers, fabric suppliers and then on the boutique. And finally, I get to see my daughter and have some time with her before bed time.

Why did you choose this particular category for your brand?

Sara Melki has tackled the high fashion, ready to wear segment and since the beginning brought special care to material and perfect finishing. With this obsession in mind, Sara Melki selects only the best suppliers, among which are Chanel’s exclusive weavers whose luxury materials are incorporated in almost all of the designs.

What is the top trait your brand is most known for?

Sara Melki enjoys style mixing her Middle Eastern couture. Her "mix and match" in fabrics, prints and cuts has become her trademark and constantly refers to her influences. First of all, her passion for exotic journeys—from China to India through Africa she nourishes her imagination with colored visuals and ethnic graphics that she transposes in her creations. Modern art is also a major source of inspiration.

What’s a surprising fact about you or your brand that your customers may not know yet?

A surprising fact about me, my customers may not know, is that I usually source the fabrics before I design the full collection, and that I create and design without sketching.

Which other designer part of the EW family do you admire & why?

The designer part of the EW family that I admire is high end Lebanese jewelry designer L'Atelier Nawbar, because of how creative they are, unique and colorful.

What do you hope your customers feel or appreciate most while wearing your pieces?

I like to create clothing for active, urban women who prefer modern luxury, who pay constant attention to their outfits despite the frantic pace of modern life. And I hope that my customers feel unique, different and comfortable when wearing my pieces.
